When you enter a portal from the overworld, the game divides your x and z coordinates (but not the y) by 8, to attain the equivalent nether location (x/8, y, z/8). If i sidestep into the portal, i enter the nether sideways, but the other way. Its purpose is to provide a simple set of instructions to easily create linked.
Say You Have A Portal In Normal World At (0,64,0) But Make A Nether Portal At (127,64,0).

I Arrive At X800, Z800 In The Nether, Walk 8 Steps Increasing X (Doing Nothing To Z) And Make My Second Portal [In The Nether] At X808.
